After the disaster that was the robbery, the other members of the gang panicked – sure their captured mates would rat them out. They dispersed, despite Osha’s pleas for calm.
Osha and Vasily decided that the best course of action would be to leave their lodgings and seek other shelter. They returned to the flop house and hurriedly bundled their possessions into a bag.
Kal asked what had happened. Osha said that they were in trouble, and the less he knew the better. In a temper, Kal said he wasn’t moving, and that Osha was a fool. He went back to bed while the pair left.
They decided to go to Benedict’s house to see if he was able to shelter them for the night. When they arrived, they were greeted by Shale, his butler, who said that Benedict had not emerged from his basement laboratory for days, and that he had heard “unnatural sounds…screaming” from behind the door.
Vasily and Osha took a candle and descended the stairs to the basement. Opening the door, they saw a woman with dark hair and pale skin looking confused. When they called out to her she bellowed in rage and rushed them. Vasily slammed the door in her face; but she broke it down – her strength was terrible and unnatural to behold.
Fleeing upstairs, and barricading another door before her, she broke it down too. Vasily tried to fend her off with his cudgel, but she came on. Osha drew her knife, but before she could attack, the woman burst out the window and leapt into the street below, sprinting off into the night.
Deciding that she could not be caught (and that supernatural things were afoot), the pair descended again into the laboratory. They found an arcane circle drawn on the floor, a coffin-like box lined with lead and half-filled with some kind of sweet-smelling liquid and Benedict’s body – the face and hands rudely torn off.
They retrieved the strange book and what looked like Benedict’s diary from the lab and went back upstairs.
They found Shale – shocked – who said he recognised the woman as Benedict’s wife, who had been dead for over 18 months. He confided that he had followed his master to Krath after her death as a “fresh start”, as Benedict had been crushed by her passing.
They convinced Shale to contact Marius, Benedict’s friend and a physician rather than the City Watch, and hid out in a stable for the night.
